Mitch and Miranda and the magic mailbox
One day I was on Facebook and saw a really cute post about a mailbox that looked like someone’s home and there was a person who kept changing out the inside with mini dolls and furniture- I immediately sent it to my best friend Jen and my Nextdoor neighbor Karen, and both of them said I needed to make something like this, for the girls, Karen’s kids. Karen and Todd are the best neighbors ever and they have given me the very best little kids Lillian and Julia.
So I understood the assignment and started planning out a 1:12 dollhouse that was originally going to sit between our yards and I would leave mail for the girls with different things inside the dollhouse, kind of like an elf on the shelf, but with a twist- they would be the good deed fairies and they would make sure the girls listen to their parents and do good things for others, and be nice to eachothers.
So the building commenced, and I did a ton of research on dollhouses and accessories and dolls- I made a little blueprint and I decided to make it a fishing shack, because their dad is a fisherman and both myself and the kids are obsessed with mermaids. I used saws and dremels and a ton of popsicle sticks of all sizes. I shrunk down photos I had took to 1:12 size, mod podged shiplap and a tile floor, all made with the procreate app on my iPad. After about a month of working on this and keeping it hidden from the girls, the big reveal was almost ready!! I had to paint faces and and glue every piece of hair to the dolls.. because who knew 1:12 dolls were not easy to come by??!!! Needless to say, this project has been the best part of a very hard time in my life, the past year and a half… and I’m so thankful for the magic it brings to everyone!!! The girls love getting magic mail and seeing everything change or move in the mailbox, and it’s just the cutest thing ever!!!
